Culture
Giving worldwide coverage to all cultures
Culture is the hallmark of France Médias Monde’s international media outlets. Thanks to its audience and its presence on five continents, the Group is a major vector of popular culture with a strong impact.
Celebrating all cultures on the airwaves and digital channels
The group offers special programming to cover major international cultural events. In the film industry, for example, FMM is a long-standing partner of major festivals, such as the Cannes Film Festival, where the Group showcases world cinema in the Pavilion of the same name, in partnership with the French Institute; or the Deauville American Film Festival, which France 24, RFI and MCD bring to life for their audiences around the world. RFI has also been present at the Avignon Festival every year for almost ten years, with the ‘Ça va, ça va le monde’ (The World Goes Round) lecture cycle which highlights French-speaking authors from Africa and the Caribbean.
The group also showcases all kinds of world music, through dedicated programmes such as ‘Musiques du monde’ and ‘Couleurs tropicales’ on RFI, and ‘Légendes urbaines’ (RFI and France 24) as well as on the RFI Musique website. It covers major music events, particularly in Africa (the group is one of the main partners of FEMUA in Ivory Coast and the Gnaoua Festival and World Music Festival in Essaouira). Through RFI’s Discovery Prize (Prix RFI Découverte), France Médias Monde promotes new musical talent from the African continent every year.
For the past five years, France Médias Monde has been taking part in Culture Prime, the public broadcasting network’s cultural and digital offering. Every week, RFI and France 24 produce two original modules broadcast on social networks and capitalise on the group’s international dimension.
An active partnership policy
France Médias Monde works closely with the Institut français, through a framework agreement that formalises many cooperative ventures, for example surrounding the Cultural Seasons, the World Cinema Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival, and the French language learning tools made available by RFI to Instituts Français around the world.
France Médias Monde partners all the major French cultural establishments
France Médias Monde supports many other French cultural institutions, particularly those based on foreign cultures, thus contributing to their international influence: Cité Internationale des Arts, Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, MuCem, Musée de l’Immigration, Centre Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo, Musée du Louvre, etc.
Media outlets as global ‘sounding boards’ for the cultural and creative industries
FMM’s cultural action is also part of a collective approach with a number of players involved in promoting France’s cultural and creative industries abroad: UniFrance, Atout France, the French National Centre of Cinema (CNC), La French Tech, etc. RFI, France 24 and MCD are committed to promoting French artists, creators and producers worldwide on their channels and digital platforms.
